It has been CAPA's goal since 1992 to a statutory definition of the titles "Paralegal" and "Legal Assistant."

This year Assemblywoman Marilyn Brewer authored AB 1761 a public protection bill which defines paralegal and legal assistant as persons with certain educational background who work under the supervision and direction of attorneys.

AB 1761 also provides that all paralegals in California must participate in continuing legal education and for penalties for those who use the title paralegal without complying with the provisions of the bill.
